NBA props: the minutes trap

You bet a star’s points over. He checks in, plays nine minutes, sits. Your bet doesn’t get voided — it loses. That’s not a glitch. It’s in every major book’s house rules.

The rule: one second on the floor = action

BookHouse rule, quoted (Massachusetts filing)Doc
FanDuel“Player Performance Markets: All bets stand once a player takes the court, irrespective of game time played. … Should a player not take any part, all bets will be void.”[src]
DraftKings“Player Performance Markets – Relevant player … must receive playing time for bets to have action.”[src]
BetMGM“Players do not have to start for action but must play for action. If a player does not take any part in a game then wagers on that player proposition will be cancelled.”[src]
Caesars“For individual game player statistical markets, if the named player takes any part in the game, wagers will stand, or else wagers will be void.” (Its live player-matchup markets do require 10 minutes.)[src]

So the void protects you only if the player never steps on the floor. A minutes restriction, an early hook in a blowout, a “tweak” in the first quarter — all graded as normal. You eat the loss.

What the data says

From our NBA database (2016-17 to 2025-26 regular seasons, players averaging 30+ minutes with 20+ games; 58,003 player-games):

1,010times a 30-mpg player logged under 20 minutes — every one an “action” bet
38%of his season scoring average in those games
98.0%finished below his average — overs dead
87.8%of usual minutes in 20+ point blowouts (10,174 games); 63.7% finished below average

In close games (final margin under 10) the same players played 105.1% of their usual minutes and scored 104.9% of their average. Lesson: star overs in projected blowouts (big spreads) are fighting the bench; star unders in projected close games are fighting overtime-level minutes.

The league’s rest rules don’t protect you either

The NBA’s Player Participation Policy (2023) covers stars (All-Star or All-NBA in the prior three seasons): teams can’t rest more than one star in the same game, stars must be available for national-TV and In-Season Tournament games, rest should be at home not on the road, no long “shutdowns”, and resting players must be on the bench visible to fans. [src] Fines: $100,000 first offense, $250,000 second, then $1,000,000 more each time after. The Brooklyn Nets were fined $100,000 under it. [src]

But read it: the policy is about missing games, not playing minutes. Minutes show up only as a workload exception (players with 34,000+ career minutes or 1,000 games) and as one factor the league may look at — whether a player “played reduced minutes.” A team can play a star 18 minutes and comply. Your prop loses either way.

When the minutes were the bet: documented integrity cases

Jontay Porter — banned for life (NBA finding), pleaded guilty

The NBA’s investigation found that before the Raptors’ March 20, 2024 game, Porter disclosed confidential information about his own health to a person he knew was an NBA bettor; an associate then placed an $80,000 parlay proposition bet to win $1.1 million that Porter would underperform. Porter played three minutes, claiming he felt ill. The league found he “limited his own game participation to influence the outcome of one or more bets.” The $80,000 bet was frozen and not paid. He also placed at least 13 bets on NBA games ($54,094 total) through an associate’s account. The suspicious March 20 bets were brought to the NBA by licensed sportsbooks and a betting-market monitoring organization. [src] He later pleaded guilty to federal wire-fraud conspiracy. [src]

Terry Rozier — federally charged (alleged, not proven)

On Oct 23, 2025 the U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of New York announced an indictment (25-CR-323). Prosecutors allege Rozier told an associate he would leave a March 23, 2023 game early, that more than $200,000 was bet on his unders, and that he exited after about nine minutes. [src] In DOJ’s words: “The charges in the indictment are allegations and the defendants are presumed innocent.” Rozier has pleaded not guilty and is seeking a separate trial. [src]

These are the cases that got caught. Books flagged them because the betting pattern was obvious. The ordinary bettor holding a star’s over on those nights just lost.
